Try-fest win closes gap on leaders

Trebanos made eleven changes from the side at Bethesda the previous Saturday. Prop Damien Blake was playing his first full game this season and it was good to welcome him back. Captain Rhodri Thomas on a rest day, had handed over the captaincy to veteran Chris Buster Harris and young Tom Carney moved from open side to play his first game for the senior side at No 8.

Trebanos played down the slope first half with a slight wind at their backs. Damjanovic was into action immediately finding touch in the corner; Cwmtwrch won the touch and cleared their line. Trebanos attacked from the lineout, sending the ball along the back division, but some good Cwmtwrch tackling kept them at bay.

After five minutes centre Hopkins scored a try under the posts after receiving an inside pass from fellow centre Barratt.  Within ten minutes Trebanos were further ahead after barnstormer Hopkins cut through the middle on a direct run to gallop under the posts for his second try. Damjanovic converted both conversions.

Damjanovic controlled the game, keeping the three quarters running, kicking superbly for the corners, and exerting pressure on the home team who were defending bravely. Open side Whiteman was at it from start to finish with an all action performance and caused havoc for the Cwmtwrch half backs, ably supported by his back row colleagues the ’Carney boys’. Trebanos backs were eager to attack and displayed some quality play with both wings and centre Barratt being tackled just short of the Cwmtwrch line.

The pressure exerted on the home team was too much to bear and it was a break by captain Harris that brought about the next score when Harris unloaded a pass to winger Williams who sped in at the side posts. Damjanovic added the two points.

There was a change at fullback when Jordan Hopkins suffered a nasty hamstring injury and Michael Morris replaced the unlucky youngster. The fifth try of the first half came from winger Penhale after some dazzling three quarter back, the winger cut inside his man and scored under the posts. Damjanovic obliged with the conversion; the outside half had given a near faultless performance barring his only penalty of the game from 50 yards, which hit the crossbar.

With Cwmtwrch now playing down the slope it was their turn to exert some pressure on the Trebanos team and their outside half successfully kept them pegged down in the corner for some five minutes but scrum half Jones sent Cwmtwrch upfield with some astute kicking. Trebanos were winning lineout ball via Owens, Morgan and Carney. From these lineouts Jones and Damjanovic kept the backs running and they displayed their talents with some superb rugby, to give credit to Cwmtwrch their back row covered and tackled superbly to deny the visitors. Barratt who was having a big game at centre had to leave the field with a shoulder injury and Trebanos re-shuffled their team with Rhys Jones coming on as scrum half, Kris Jones moving to the outside half berth and Damjanovic moving to centre.

These changes spurred 'Banos on and from a three-quarter movement going right young Jones switched left with a huge pass to Damjanovic who scored half way out and also kicked the conversion. Cwmtwrch now attacked Trebanos back in the corner they went and only some superb tackling from Morgan, Whiteman and Kris Jones stopped certain tries. Eventually Jones worked the touchline and from half way, attacked the Cwmtwrch line through the forwards, eventually it was Whiteman who reversed the play passing to Rhys Jones who stormed over in the corner; Damjanovic kicking uphill, slotted over a beautiful conversion. As the game came to an end it was that man Penhale again, who raced in for a final try and Damjanovic once more added the two points.
