Trebanos enter big week in fine form

(match report by Roy Bowen)

Trebanos were playing at home for the first time since February and what a beautiful spring day it was, with lovely sunshine and the spectators in their shirtsleeves. The pitch was in good condition and conducive to running rugby and that is what we got!

Trebanos decided to play down the valley with a slight breeze and the sunshine in their faces. From the kick off Llanbybie found a good touch on the half way line, Trebanos No8 Luke Davies won ball in the middle of the lineout and the backs were off at a gallop; Damjanovic to Thomas who broke through under the posts but his final pass went astray 10 yards out. From the ensuing scrum Damjanovic went blindside but winger Morris narrowly failed to gather the pass.

Llandybie won ball and outside half Wayne Williams kicked them down to the half way line. Llandybie forwards drove on from lineout and after two 'pick and go’s’, Trebanos were penalised for not standing on their feet, going down and killing the ball. Full back Josh Featherstone failed with the penalty. Within minutes Trebanos were penalised once more and Featherstone kicked it over from 35 yards.

Llandybie’s forwards were going well during this period, winning good lineout ball through Emyr Lewis and Cerith Williams and scrum half John Jones threatened the Trebanos line with some sniping runs. From a foray into the Trebanos half by the Llandybie forwards Trebanos were penalised again for the same offence but Featherstone failed with his attempt. Trebanos eventually worked their way to the half way line, No8 Davies winning ball at the lineout. Damjanovic sped it along the backs, and with good back and forward interplay it was wing forward Whiteman who took the glory scoring a try under the posts; Damjanovic converted.

With passive scrums throughout the game, tight head Chris Balfe now with energy to spare made a 20 yard run down the touchline before passing to scrum half Jones who was unfairly tackled and Trebanos dispatched it to touch 15 yards out. From the line out Trebanos won ball but a forward pass forced a Llanbybie scrum 15 yards out. From the scrum Rod Thomas charged the ball down and it resulted in a five metre scrum for Trebanos.  No 8 Davies picked up, drove on, and passed to Kris Davies who sent winger Penhale racing in for a try. The ‘Kicking Machine’, added the points.

It was Trebanos who came strongly again at the end of the first half and the forwards showed what they could do, the best try of the game started some 30 yards from the visitors line with prop Buster Harris passing to hooker Rhys Thomas on to second row Steve Morgan to prop Chris Balfe who made a telling final pass for Steve Morgan to score at the side of the posts (and gave us the same celebratory performance of the Irish jig as in Bethesda). Again that man Damjanovic converted.

Half time: Trebanos 19 Llandybie 3

The second half started in style for Trebanos, from some back play and quality handling especially from centres Thomas and Hopkins, it was scrum half Jones who put Damjanovic in to score and he added the two points. There was some brave tackling and covering from Llandybie especially from scrum half Jones and No8 Linden Jones but the cracks were starting to appear as Trebanos stepped up the tempo and went on a try scoring spree.

Damjanovic who had controlled the game for Trebanos sent in winger Andrew Penhale whose pace gave Llandybie problems throughout the game; he scored under the posts and Damjanovic added the points. Next Harris and Davies got in on the act providing Carney with ball before he sent winger Morris on a run up the touchline only to tackled just short of the line.

Llandybie attacked Trebanos but the movement broke down on the Trebanos 22 metre line Damojanovic received the ball from Jones and he made a clean break up field to the Llandybie 22 metre line on hand to take a try scoring pass was prop Chris Balfe, who had an outstanding afternoon. Damjanovic added the points.

That was Damjanovic's last contribution to the game and what a contribution he made, coach Rhodri Jones was wrapping him up until next Saturday for the semi final against Senghenydd. On 65 minutes Trebanos used their subs and back in the fray was Rhodri Davies, his first game since being injured at Gowerton and it was good to welcome him back.

The spectators were having an array of skills and running rugby from Trebanos and the next movement came from Rhod Thomas to Penhale, over on the left wing looking for work, who passed it to right wing Morris, who again was tackled into touch a metre short of the line. However, from the lineout Rhodri Davies pinched the ball and stormed over at the side of the posts for an opportunist try. Captain Rhod Thomas slotted over the conversion.

Rhydian Edwards, who had replaced Damjanovic, put in a telling kick to the touchline and it was Penhale who gathered; beating two men, he raced in again for another try. Thomas added the points. With the game quickly coming to a end the ever alert scrum half Jones fastened on to a pass and darted over for the final try of the game Thomas obliging with the conversion
