Seven tries secures bonus point win for Trebanos

(match report by Roy Bowen)

On a cold grey day at Tycroes, the ‘Ancient Borough’, warmed the hearts of their supporters with a display of running rugby on their way to 7 tries and 53 points.
There was a warm welcome back for Rhys Carney after an absence of 4 months due to a broken leg and though he only played the first half he displayed his skills with an all round quality performance.

Making his debut at outside half for the senior team was Rhydian Edwards joining his elder brother Cerith in the Trebanos back division and it was youngster Edwards that got the game underway, kicking into a slight breeze at Tycroes. The ball was won by Tycroes and outside half Williams found touch on the half way line.

From the line out and first into action were Trebanos who kicked for the corner. A poor return kick from Tycroes that went infield was gathered by scrum half Kris Jones who raced 20 yards before being tackled on the Tycroes 22 metre line; a ruck was formed and Tycroes were penalised for killing the ball on the ground. Rhodri Thomas slotted over the penalty from 30 yards.

From the kick off, Trebanos collected and sent the ball to the backs; Hopkins straightened the line but was tackled, again Tycroes were penalised for playing the ball on the ground. Trebanos took a short penalty and drove onwards; again Tycroes were penalised for the same offence and Rhodri Thomas duly slotted over the penalty from 35 yards. Within 3 minutes the home side were penalised for the same offence but Thomas failed with the penalty attempt from 35 yards.

It was now Trebanos’s turn to defend when No8 Hughes carried from a scrum on the narrow before passing to the left wing who sped down the touchline beating two defenders before Simon Morris made a covering tackle. Tycroes pressurised the Trebanos line but some resolute tackling kept the opponents at bay.

Tycroes were penalised on the Trebanos 22 metre line and young Rhydian Edwards took a tap penalty before passing the ball to Gareth Hopkins who made space and put Andrew Penhale away. The speedy wing beat two players before outpacing the cover defence to score under the posts; Rhod Thomas kicked the conversion.

From the kick off Trebanos put pressure on Tycroes and won a scrum on the half way line, Kris Jones came on the narrow side passing the ball to Cerith Edwards who chipped ahead where Simon Morris gathered, beat two defenders and crossed for a try under the posts. Rhod Thomas added the two points.

Tycroes were still in this game and drove upfield through their forwards. They won possession and their centre was tackled without the ball resulting in a penalty. Outside half Williams slotted over the penalty from 25 yards. Within minutes Trebanos were penalised on the half way line for not releasing after a tackle and Williams attempt fell just short of the target. Right on half time dynamic centre Gareth Hopkins became a bit too dynamic and was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle.

Half time score Tycroes 3 Trebanos 20

From the second half kick off Trebanos exerted pressure onto the Tycroes line, Kris Jones and Cerith Edwards finding touch in the right hand corner of the field. From an ensuing lineout Trebanos won ball and Kris Jones moved it to Malcolm Whiteman who provided a pass for hooker Dai Davies to score at the side of the posts; Rhod Thomas added the two points.

Open side wing forward Malcolm Whiteman was displaying his experience, and knowledge, and gave the Tycroes half backs a torrid time disrupting and destroying any rhythm in their game. Indeed it was Whiteman who scored the next try; he emerged from a maul some 20 yards from the Tycroes line and scampered over under the posts with Rhod Thomas adding the conversion.

Trebanos were now taking a stranglehold on the game, and during an attacking
move on the Tycroes 22 metre line they knocked on and Tycroes put in at the scrum. Trebanos disrupted the scrum, Kris Jones won the ball before transferring to prop
Chris Balfe who made a perfectly timed pass for Andrew Penhale to score in the
corner; Rhod Thomas kicked the conversion

Youngster Edwards, the Trebanos outside half, kept the backs busy with a series of
passes, centres Rhod Thomas and Gareth Hopkins displayed some strong running
and Trebanos back row players gave quality support during breakdowns to win ball
and maintain momentum.

Tycroes defended strongly for 10 minutes as Trebanos kept them hemmed in their
22 metre area. Some excellent inter passing by Simon Morris, Steve Williams and Cerith Edwards sent the latter in at the corner but Rhod Thomas failed with the conversion attempt.

The most popular try of the day was scored at the end of the game by second row Steve Morgan who received a pass from Williams on the narrow side, with only one defender to beat and sprinted 20 yards to score a try at the side of the posts. Captain Rod Thomas added the extra two points. I’m sure I saw a side step, change of pace and a swerve in that try.

Today’s win by Trebanos was an excellent team effort, especially from the young players who were called upon due to injuries. I thought that prop Chris Balfe and No 8 Luke Davies played really well and worked hard all game.

My man of the match Malcolm Whiteman.
